Cheryl made a surprise early return to The Voice UK on Saturday night, appearing in the Battle Rounds alongside her longtime friend will.i.am weeks before her official tenure as a coach begins.
The Girls Aloud star, 43, was confirmed last month as a coach for the 2027 series, replacing Sir Tom Jones in a shake-up that has overshadowed the current run. Viewers were treated to a preview of the new era as she joined will.i.am to help him choose which three of his contestants should progress to the semi-finals.
A comeback carefully watched
The appearance is Cheryl's most significant television role in years, and it arrives burdened with controversy she did nothing to create. The decision to drop Sir Tom, a fixture of the show since its earliest days, has drawn fury from fans and, reportedly, from within the building. Will.i.am, who remains on the panel alongside Kelly Rowland, is said to have made his displeasure known backstage.
"This is her big TV comeback and right now ITV are letting her be the fall guy for taking Sir Tom's seat," one source close to the production told the Mail. "None of this is her fault, it's been handled terribly."
The Voice Shake-Up at a Glance
- Cheryl appeared in Saturday's Battle Rounds as will.i.am's assistant, ahead of joining the show as a full coach in 2027.
- She replaces Sir Tom Jones, who said last month he did not want to leave the programme after nine years.
- Will.i.am and Kelly Rowland remain as coaches; will.i.am is reportedly furious over Sir Tom's treatment.
- Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon will take over as hosts from Emma Willis, who is joining Strictly Come Dancing as a presenter.
- ITV says it remains in talks with Sir Tom about a role in the next series.
Sir Tom made his own feelings plain last month, insisting he did not want to leave The Voice in a statement that laid bare his frustration with the broadcaster. ITV, for its part, has sought to keep the door ajar. "We have loved working with Sir Tom Jones over the past nine years on The Voice UK," a spokesman said. "While he will no longer be a full-time coach on series 15, we continue to talk to Sir Tom and his team about his involvement in the next series."
New faces on the sofa too
The churn extends beyond the red chairs. Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon are set to replace Emma Willis as hosts, after Willis landed the coveted role of presenter on Strictly Come Dancing, itself entering a new era this autumn.
For Cheryl, Saturday's low-key debut as a Battle Rounds assistant offered a gentle reintroduction before the full glare of the 2027 series. Judging by the reaction on social media, where clips of her advice to contestants circulated within minutes of broadcast, the audience's appetite for her return is genuine. Whether the same can be said of its forgiveness for Sir Tom's exit remains the show's most delicate question.
